Hi everyone !
Several sources have come out yesterday and today that BAKKT (Intercontinental Exchange company) is interested in buying eBay for more or less 30 billion. This is an offer (rumour ?) and eBay has not responded yet and this does not mean that it is going to happen, but it remains interesting to follow.
BAKKT has launched Bitcoin futures settled in Bitcoin, launched Bitcoin futures settled in cash for Bitcoin and is going to launch most likely mid-2020 an app where you can buy coffee at Starbucks with your BTC. BAKKT sees a lot of potential in Bitcoin and so their offer for eBay does not surprise me. I am waiting for years already for eBay to start accepting cryptocurrencies as a payment option, but so far they do not. Hopefully BAKKT will be able to take over eBay, because I honestly believe this would mean in the future that they will start accepting cryptocurrencies and that we do not necessarily have to go through Paypal with its abhorrent fees of 5% and exchange fees where for example the EURO-DOLLAR is at 1.105, they will put it at 1.055, which means if you buy an item you will pay more money (which goes to Paypal obviously and not the seller of the item).
Apparently BAKKT is mostly interested in the core marketing of eBay and they believe with their technological expertise that they can better connect buyers and sellers in the e-commerce. I am a seller on eBay and I like to buy items as well (specially mineral specimens) and I would more than welcome cryptocurrencies as a payment and better fees structures ! I would love to see cryptocurrencies get accepted as a form of payment and this will only be a matter of time ! It would be great for adoption if this is going to happen.
Let me know what you think about this rumour !
