How many people in the world actually own Bitcoin?
The answer might surprise you.
According to Crypto.com’s latest market-sizing research, the number of Bitcoin owners grew from 337 million in 2024 to approximately 365 million in 2025. That means Bitcoin owners alone represented nearly half of all cryptocurrency owners worldwide.
But there’s an important catch.
There is no perfect way to count Bitcoin owners.
Bitcoin addresses are not people. One person can control multiple wallets, while one exchange or custodial wallet can represent millions of users. That’s why different research groups produce very different estimates. Some 2026 estimates put global Bitcoin ownership around 300–500 million people.
🌍 Hundreds of Millions Own Bitcoin
Even using the more conservative estimates, hundreds of millions of people already have some form of Bitcoin exposure.
Think about that for a second.
The global population is more than 8 billion people.
If around 300–500 million people own Bitcoin, that still means the overwhelming majority of the world doesn't own any Bitcoin yet.
And that is where the story gets interesting.
Bitcoin adoption could still have an enormous runway.
₿ But Owning Bitcoin Is Not the Same as Owning 1 BTC
This is where Bitcoin scarcity becomes really fascinating.
Estimates suggest that fewer than 1 million wallets contain at least 1 BTC. But even that number doesn't directly translate into 1 million people because exchanges, institutions and custodians can control large numbers of BTC on behalf of many users.
There will ultimately only ever be:
21,000,000 BTC.
More than 20 million have already been mined, leaving fewer than 1 million BTC to be created over the remaining decades.
Now imagine hundreds of millions of people trying to own pieces of a monetary network whose supply is permanently limited.
That changes the way you think about scarcity.
🤯 The Interesting Question
Instead of asking:
“How expensive is Bitcoin?”
Maybe we should also ask:
“How many people will want Bitcoin in the future?”
If Bitcoin ownership continues growing from hundreds of millions toward billions of people, the competition for a fixed supply becomes an entirely different story.
Bitcoin doesn't need everyone to own 1 BTC.
It only needs more people to want a piece of the network.
And remember:
1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats.
You don't need to own a whole Bitcoin to participate.
You can start with sats.
You can use Bitcoin.
You can send Bitcoin.
You can save Bitcoin.
And you can learn how the network works.
⚡ Bitcoin Is Still Early?
Whether Bitcoin is “early” is ultimately a matter of perspective.
But one number is hard to ignore:
Hundreds of millions of people may already own Bitcoin, while billions still don't.
That leaves an enormous potential audience for Bitcoin adoption.
The next chapter may not be about convincing the first million people.
It may be about what happens when the next billion people discover Bitcoin.
21 million BTC.
Billions of people.
8 billion+ humans.
