Any learner of the Japanese language would have come across this saying soon enough. It’s frequently used in conversation, books, social media posts, etc.
Bitcoiners will gravitate towards this saying since it is about the currency we value most of all: time. Ichigo ichie literally means “one time, one meeting” and is often translated to once in a lifetime.
I have known Ichigo Ichie for a long time, but yesterday was the first time that I felt warranted the use of this phrase.
We visited the S.E.A Aquarium. This we includes my father, my parents-in-law (who are in town from Japan), my wife and children, as well as me.
Who knows if my parents-in-law will visit us again next year? Who knows if my father will be free to join us again next year? And this is gonna sound morbid, but here it is. Who knows how many good years my father will have left to enable him to go on such trips?
And then, my toddler. She discovered walking six months ago and applied her love for it by dashing all over the place. Pitter patter pitter patter. I think I will remember this trip as the most exhausting one ever because I was running after her most of the time.
But I guess it’s okay because she will grow up and show me another facet of her development next year.
I have visited the aquarium several times already. Nonetheless, having 一期一会 at the back of mind charged this visit with poignant significance and enabled me to savour it just a little bit more.

一期一会
