My school has a niche in urban farming. Recently, we even acquired vertical towers and grew xiao bai cai, lettuce and spinach on them.
When these leafy vegetables were ready to be harvested, I was fortunate enough to be involved. It was an eye-opening experience witnessing how the system worked due to the water being pumped upward and then flowing down through the towers due to gravitational force. This allowed for the vegetables to be stacked like HDB flats. I gingerly pulled the vegetables out from the containers because I didn’t want to damage the roots. I then placed the vegetables in plastic bags because my school would donate to a community partner called Food from the Heart.
I felt a great sense of accomplishment because my small contribution helped ensure food security for the less fortunate residents in my neighbourhood. I would harvest vegetables again in a heartbeat
