All large shopping malls and hotels are required to segregate their food waste. Your experience in Yishun Primary School will stand you in good stead should you wish to venture into the facilities industry in the future.

At the end of the project, students will be able to:
• Describe how black soldier fly larvae convert food waste into compost
• Describe how leftover ingredients can be converted into compost
• List the benefits of compost in agriculture

Black Soldier Fly
Larvae can eat food waste up to four times its body weight
Their poo is known as frass. It does not smell and can be used as fertiliser.
The adult black soldier flies neither bite humans nor carry diseases.

List of Duties
Feed uncooked food waste to larvae.
Ensure that no large bones or gravy are added inadvertently
Weigh the food waste
Collect the frass

Eco-enzymes
Alternate dry leaves with fruit peels and leftover vegetables to form a compost pile.
Mix this compost pile regularly
Eco-enzymes can be added to the pile to speed up the rate of decomposition.

List of Duties
Deposit both cooked and uncooked food waste into the bin.
Ensure that the waste is not too oily.
Deposit carbon-rich materials like shredded paper, dry leaves and cardboard.
Stir the compost pile
