It was a scorching Saturday morning. Yet, I strode happily to school, with a broad grin stretched across my face. As the Vice-president of the Art Club, I was thrilled to be involved in the annual CCA Open House. It was the first time I was entrusted with such an immense responsibility, so I was determined to do well.

My grin disappeared the moment I arrived at the Art Booth. My juniors looked crestfallen, their shoulders slumped in defeat. The air was brimming with so much tension that one could slice it with a knife.

To my utter horror, the President had apparently left the artworks we had painstakingly made at home. With only an hour left before the start of the Open House, we felt the pressure closing in on us like nooses tightened on our necks.

I peeked at my President. He was sobbing uncontrollably. It was up to me to salvage the situation. I was not comfortable with giving instructions, but I had no choice. I could not have the visitors come to an empty Art Club booth. Our reputation would be tarnished.

My mind raced feverishly, thinking of a way to get out of this predicament. Just then, I stumbled upon an idea. We had tons of egg cartons in the Art Room. We could possibly paint them and present them as the four stages of the butterfly’s life cycle.

I said this idea aloud to my juniors. Their expressions changed from worry to excitement. We immediately got down to work. Racing against time, we painted the egg cartons and made the life cycles of different butterflies. 

We made it after all! The visitors lavished us with praise, complimenting us on our thoughtful sustainability efforts. Little did they know the truth!

In the end, I learnt an important lesson. I might have been apprehensive when I encountered a crisis, but I managed to think of a solution to avert it. Leading my members for the first time during the CCA carnival was challenging, yet confidence-boosting. I was glad to have gone through this baptism of fire.
