Performing with My Form Class on Children’s Day

“I signed all of you up to perform for the Children’s Day concert,” I announced excitedly to my form class, 3 Stalwart, on the first day of Term 3 in 2019.

I immediately caught the attention of 39 students. Most of them looked confused.

“Yes, I know it is unheard of for children to perform in front of their peers during Children’s Day,” I explained myself, “But I think that you guys can do it! Are you up for the challenge?”

To my immense pride and relief, no one protested. Not a single one.

I then showed them a video of “This Is Me” from the show “The Greatest Showman”. Everyone agreed that this was an excellent song choice to inspire children with.

We only had 2.5 weeks before the concert. However, this did not deter my students. They organised themselves into four groups. Everyone had an important part to play!

“Who wants to hold the microphones and lead the singers?” I asked. Two girls and one boy volunteered almost instantly. “I need you to incorporate cartwheels here,” I instructed the leader of the dancers on another occasion. She nodded her head and reworked her choreography.

I gave similar instructions to the drummers and runners. They practised hard, arguing with, yet supporting one another through it all. They tried their best to be leaders and team players.

On the actual day, 3 Stalwart performed to rapturous applause. We had a whale of a time.
