6 Responsibility is made up of 41 interesting individuals. In our classroom, we cultivate a culture of care and respect, where students go through thick and thin together and journey through the ups and downs of life. This class photo was taken after our breakfast with the school leaders, in which some students rose to the occasion and asked questions. We look forward to them polishing their communication skills this year through a schoolwide initiative called Talk Moves.
We focus on having our students experience engaging learning experiences. Here, you can see how they not only learn in the classroom, but also beyond the four walls of a classroom. Yishun Primary School is blessed with many facilities and CCAs for students to grow their minds and be all-rounded individuals. Through outdoor learning and external competitions, they taste failure, learn from their mistakes and appreciate the value of teamwork. In fact, our football and basketball boys are battling hard in the National School Games. Also, our dance and band students are practising hard for the Singapore Youth Festival.
The joy of teaching children is that their minds are malleable. By being open-minded, it makes us educators easier to foster the growth mindset in our students. We recognise that learning can be hard. However, by breaking a difficult topic into bite-sized concepts, we find that students are eager to improve their knowledge, one step at a time.
Science concepts are best internalised through hands-on experience. Together as a class, we have connected electric circuits, built terrariums and even measured our heart rates. This helps to create a fun and conducive learning environment in which our students understand the world around them better.
Just last week, we took our students to our in-house Integrated Farming System. There, students transplanted seedlings of kangkong, xiao bai cai, cai xin and Okinawa spinach. Not only that, they also understood how fishes and plants mutually benefit one another. We hope that our experiential experience will encourage our young minds to remain curious and receptive to receiving new knowledge. They are the ones who have to tackle global problems like climate change and food insecurity.
In short, we seek to enhance our students’ self-confidence so that they will be motivated to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. I am confident that when you speak to your child, he or she is likely to say that he or she is more confident compared to last year. We affirm this personal growth and strive to work together with you closely to bring out the best in your child.
To help them believe in the Growth Mindset, we believe that passion is a good starting point. That’s why we encourage your children to showcase their talents in singing, dancing and performing. When they believe that they have value to add to the world, they will be motivated to learn.
