- To reinforce preschoolers’ understanding of life cycles of animals so that they can articulate that all living things have young.
- Children then proceed to learn about the life cycles of animals through an interactive memory game. They will be given about 20 pairs of animal cards which encompass all six categories of animals in Singapore’s primary science curriculum: MR FIBA (Mammals Reptiles Fish Insects Birds Amphibians). After observing the cards, they will match each young animal to its corresponding adult.
- The matching activity also enables precocious children to apply their observation skills. After successfully matching each young animal to its adult, they will be guided by the teachers to understand the idea that while the young of some animals resemble the adult, the young of other animals look drastically different from the adult.
- Animal cards will also be placed at the activity area so that some preschoolers can hone their understanding of life cycles while their peers engage in the taping of orchids.
- At Yishun Primary School, we centre our science curriculum framework on scientific inquiry. We strongly believe that it is vital for educators to inculcate an open and inquisitive mind among our students. Doing so effectively will help our students develop emerging 21st century competencies (E21CC).
- To help our students broaden their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, we are committed to extend their learning beyond the classroom. We adopt a whole-school approach and guide them to participate in the Young Scientist Badge Scheme (YSBS). First launched in 1982, YSBS is a programme designed to inspire interest in STEM learning among students.
- Our Science teachers have thoughtfully curated the following learning packages on Student Learning Space (SLS).
YSBS Programme Level 1 I’m a Young Entomologist Primary 1 and 2 2 I’m a Young Botanist Primary 3 3 I’m a Young Environmentalist Primary 4 4 I’m a Young Water Ambassador Primary 5 5 I’m a Young Sustainability Champion Primary 6
- You might wish to guide your child/ward to complete his/her designated learning package on SLS. To affirm our students for their efforts, the Science department would select deserving students to receive YSBS physical badges, magnetic kits (for Primary 3 students), as well as electrical kits (for Primary 5 students).
- We trust that as your child/ward embarks on this journey of self-directed learning, there will be many opportunities for parent-child bonding as you guide him/her along.
