How to ace a listening Compre exam

How to ace a listening Compre exam

I’m not a student but I did prepare my students for the PSLE listening comprehension this year. Here is what I did to prepare them.
First, take out all your listening Compre practices and see if you can spot patterns in regard to your frequently made errors. Is it the note-taking section that pulls down your overall score or is it the myriad perspectives question that trips you over? When you know your weak areas, only then can you work intentionally to plug your learning gaps.
Secondly, pore over the transcripts and listen to the audio files (which should be available on YouTube). Jot down the signal words and pointer sentences that direct you towards the answer. Also notice how tricky the detractors are. Sometimes we assume that the last thing being uttered is the answer but that’s just a red herring thrown as a bait to see if we would catch it.
Doing this will also enhance your confidence about the kinds of questions asked. I don’t know about O levels but common PSLE question types include what the character was feeling, the most important thing, and what the finalised plan was. If you do this conscientiously, you should be able to pool together a list of high-frequency words and phrases that are likely to appear.
Lastly, turn to ChatGPT and luvvoice to help yourself create audio files. Dump your notes on ChatGPT and get it to categorise them into meaningful themes. Then dump the output on luvvoice and get it to churn out audio files. Listen to them when you go about your daily routine. Training your ears is essential even if you only have a week before the exam.
Good luck! You’ve got this!
