Eco-enyzmes

After considering the various options, eco-enzymes were deemed as the most viable organic composting method because of the myriad benefits they offered. These include:

  • Eco-enzymes do not require a lot of direct supervision and care, which will not be a source of worry when staff take their protected leave during the June and December holidays.
  • The compost they produce does not emit any smell, which will not add a stench on the pleasantness of the school environment.
  • This method does not require much space, which makes it easy to be integrated into our existing ALP STEM (Sustainability) programmes.
  • Students can participate directly in the making of raw materials, including fruit peels and food scraps, which gives them first-hand insight into how food waste can be converted into useful compost. This might also create a ripple effect, in which some interested students might replicate this with their families at home. Curriculum-wise, students will gain a deeper appreciation of microorganisms as well as how the increase in exposed surface area facilitates the rate of decomposition of food waste.
  • Potential for greater community involvement. Aside from collaborating with Republic Polytechnic, Yishun Primary School may leverage this project as a way to network with community organisations, including Tzu Chi Humanitarian Youth Centre and Ground Up Initiative, both of which have organic composting sites at their premises.

The following locations were identified to be potential sites for the eco-enzymes composting.
Putting eco-enzyme composting bins beside these blue recycling bins sends a strong message to staff, students and visitors in regard to our strong commitment to sustainability.

Placing eco-enzyme composting bins near our Integrated Farming System increases the visibility of our organic composting efforts as well as offers the space for us to put 5 to 10 bins.

Expert insight on the following issues would aid in Yishun Primary School setting up a viable and vibrant organic composting site.
