Yes, I know that I’m a fast and hard worker and bring an unprecedented level of professionalism to the workplace. But I’m always keen to read such books because teachers are in a unique situation, I reckon. Our timetable is different every day, so I think it’s hard to stick to a solid morning routine. Plus, sometimes you arrive in school, to be greeted by two relief periods to do. Suddenly, finding time to have lunch is my top-of-mind priority!
This book gave me ideas on how I can gain better control of my workday, of which the most promising is the 8-minute meeting with your boss. I applied it twice this term. I managed to present all I wanted to discuss within 8 mins for the first but my second attempt dragged into a 20+ minute discussion. I don’t know if my HOD respects me more but I did gain more respect for myself. Ya know, writing a proper email to call for a meeting, preparing resources for it, and pushing towards a resolution. I’m DA MAN.
Another idea that galvanised me into action is keeping your files less than full. That way, you won’t be forced to leave papers lying all over your table. Makes sense but for someone who likes to keep my things filled to the brim, it was a great call-to-action. Suffice it to say that these days, I am decluttering so often that some colleagues are no longer surprised why I’m poring over my paper piles and sieving out those that showcase my creative mind. As Marie Kondo would say, “spark joy!”
I also liked how Peg Pickering explained the Slight Edge Principle. We all know that small changes, over time, make a big difference, but it was the way he left a blank page titled My Ideas for Slight Edge Principle at the end of every chapter that fired up my competitive spirit. So what is that extra 1% I can do to gain an edge over my competitors human and android alike? Fighting to remain relevance in the fast-changing workplace!
I guess these three simple ideas made me feel more in control of my workday. You know, students may get intro trouble, colleagues may stop by for a chat, an unexpected email takes up more of my time than I expect, but my heart is as calm as the placid ocean. And I get right to it, like a roly-poly toy.
