Book Review: "Egghead"

Dear teachers,   Spelling Bee fever is upon us. The quarter-final round awaits us on 15th August.   This week, I will like to introduce to you “Egghead”, an Aldo Zelnick comic novel. It weaves disparate elements into a unique story: Thomas Edison, Halloween, Spanish culture and even dementia. For this reason, I don’t think many students will be able to follow the twists and turns and enjoy it.   2f534147e1eb470f8e8fdd6567ecd5b7b6da020c412921482d009d33579bebe8.jpg Nonetheless, for the curious student, this book will serve as an invaluable resource for Spelling Bee because all the exciting “e” words are thoughtfully explained in the “E” gallery at the end of the book. Incidentally, “egghead” refers to somebody who’s so smart he’s nerd-smart. The motivated student could even use it to learn new words for the Workplace Literacy test. As you can see from the familiarisation test, the vocabulary words used all begin with the same letter “a”. Who knows? Maybe our students will encounter a vocabulary section that requires them to employ words that begin with “e”.   8d0e165c58184859c81dbe8ce5ac7a746c3e5d9a022557fb2c1b2484bc4ddd2b.jpg   30a48b8a416a0c74bbaa19508eab0e3699b9280d096662b29feaac18aa326182.jpg   On a personal note, I was intrigued by the Spanish gallery at the end of the book. I learnt one idiom “siempre llueve sobre mojado” (When it rains, it pours). Hope to use it in an authentic situation one day!   c7d87d9ea0035b2f31988014cdc4b96aa2e1db765859f7c4c956a0baecbf08e5.jpg   You may borrow my personal copy to lend it to a student whom you think might be interested in reading it. I also have the book that starts with “b” - “Bogus”.
