Is trust an emotion or an intrinsic part of human nature?
There are so many things we trust without any consideration, for instance, that the sun will rise every day, that we will wake up every morning. This means we basically trust the benevolence of life. Everything around us in nature thrives as if by itself, if it doesn’t, it dies.
Why then did trust become an issue? Trustless is defined as ‘not deserving trust’ whereas in the blockchain space it means something completely different. It means there is no need to trust any one stranger, third party, or institution for a payment system to work. The system through protocols and code achieves consensus enabling peer-to-peer sending and receiving of transactions using smart social contracts based on shared values and expectations.
Imagine a system that serves everyone so well that there is no need for trust because there is no space for corruption, it is all transparent and open, it is not bribeable because there is no one particular person or institution to bribe. It grows according to that which is already intrinsically present as protocol.
According to psychology, we learn to trust or not, in the first two years of life. In classic psychological terms, trust is considered a ‘feeder’ of emotion.
An emotional attitude may be understood as a general pattern an individual follows in the way they perceive the world or some part of it. Trust may be considered as such a pattern. Trust is an attitude we develop to cope with risk in an individual way. Trustful interactions, allow individuals to experience their values as shared with other individuals or institutions and thus a trusting attitude is developed.
People, in general, have become very untrusting not only of systems but of each other with good reason as many are out to just take what they can and rip off whoever is gullible enough to fall for their trap. This has become limiting, unproductive, and dysfunctional. There are so many seemingly good causes that turn out to benefit only a few, that it is difficult to discern and the general pattern has become distrust rather than trust. One can easily feel quite stupid when you get caught by a scam and blame yourself for it because you are frowned upon. This impedes the drive to take risks, to try something new, and in these tough times we are in, it seems skepticism is not a bad rule of thumb to go by. It is as if the ‘clever’ ones are the ones that can pocket the most for themselves.
How can we possibly change this around? For future generations to trust each other and life again? Perhaps if we could create systems consciously for the betterment of all? If a system could be tamper-proof and look after the security of its users. Perhaps one day we as humans would learn through repetition of trusting patterns that we can live in such a way that there is no need to trust, that all can thrive and be their best as trust becomes an intrinsic part of human nature again, naturally so that all may thrive.
