What's buzzing, friends?
Gladiators. If you are a fan, you may have seen them enter the arena looking lean and mean. Or perhaps, in history books, you may have seen them as hungry fighters standing up to lions and other hungry thin warriors. However, this portrayal may be off as gladiators may have been much more portly.
Gladiators were perhaps not just lean fighters who ate a protein-packed diet to keep in shape for their fights. Recent research suggests that these fighters were perhaps actually quite different from popular perception. Contrary to popular belief, gladiators were not lean and muscular but were quite overweight. They were also vegetarians, which is a stark contrast to the carnivorous image of gladiators that have been portrayed in popular culture (rippling chest and six-packs... perhaps not - more like Dad Bod).
Researchers have found that gladiators were made to consume a diet primarily of grains, beans, and vegetables. This was mainly because it was much cheaper than a meat-based diet (meat was a luxury back then). In addition, some historical records indicate that gladiators were also made to drink a special ash-based drink high in carbohydrates, as it would strengthen their bones.
So, next time you watch a movie with gladiators entering the arena to battle, you can scoff at the wrong portrayal of the ripped dudes and chuckle; as you know, historically, they were bigger.
