Crypto Music [A super-concise introduction]

Present in every facet of our lives, music is an integral part of society. Whilst money helps us live, music nourishes our soul, but we must not forget about the creators of music. The artists which are often mistreated or exploited. Sure, we hear about famous artists living in luxury such as the likes of Eminem or Beyoncé... But don't forget that there are artists that make music of a similar high quality but earn very little due their royalties being taken away by large companies or a middle man.

Cryptocurrency is already and will be revolutionising the music industry mostly due to NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

Pros:

  • Control returns to artists.
  • Prevents piracy.
  • Organisation - stable coins and can help manage multiple streams of revenue from different places.
  • Fans can support artists directly leading to better/more interaction.
  • Reduction of ticket scalpers for the concert business: see Yellowheart.
  • Royalties can be placed on resales.

Cons:

  • Energy intensive - bad for the environment
  • Mining NFTs are expensive -> prices will be high -> only wealthy will be able to purchase -> elitist music sector
  • Requires a large crypto educational effort on the population as crypto is often associated with gambling.
  • Better organisation can only occur after most Music service provider join.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons, hence the integration of crypto into music is inevitable.
