I recently found this film while browsing for something interesting to watch, and ever since I saw it, I thought about sharing it with you. The title of this short film is Special Day, and it is available on the ALTER channel on YouTube. It was directed by Teal Greyhavens in 2018.
The synopsis goes something like this: Emily is a quiet girl who comes from an unusual family. Upon turning 18, the most hidden secret of her family is revealed to her. This surprise that her family was hiding is the reason for their success all this time. You immediately wonder about the nature of this gift until Emily is startled by a sound outside the house. When she looks out, she sees a specter watching her from a distance. Her mother tells our protagonist not to be scared, that this has happened to all family members. When you turn 18, this creature appears and accompanies you for the rest of your life. A man with a deformed face who always follows you is tremendously terrifying. The mother explains that as your death approaches, this entity will get closer and closer. This new revelation only makes you more scared because at that moment, the same being and those of all family members are nearby. An announcement that they will all die immediately, but how?
The film presents a gloomy but familiar environment, where the expressions of the people around Emily are much more eerie than the monsters themselves. Although I don't know more works from these actors, they present themselves as extremely convincing and professional, taking care of each of their words and expressions, especially the performance of the actress who plays Emily.
The choice of the soundtrack is also another very strong point, as it manages to take us from one feeling to another with ease, initially even reminding us of some Tim Burton films. The sound effects are also very precise and synthesize the transition from a family celebration to a terrifying atmosphere.
The way the mother describes the creature as a new friend is truly terrifying, as is the part where each family member congratulates her separately, perhaps proud that the secret is now shared with her.
The film leaves us waiting for another ending, because we leave with more doubts and questions and the feeling of needing an answer, a why and a how. Even so, it is an extremely captivating proposal that will keep you on the edge of your seat for a few minutes. It is proof that horror and terror do not need guts and blood to produce a sense of unease in the viewer. I hope you enjoy it!
