Hello retro gaming friends, video games undoubtedly unleash a plethora of feelings and emotions in us. Many of these can bring back memories tied to our childhood, a time when everything was more relaxed and free from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Today, I want to share with you my experience of returning to one of the games I enjoyed the most as a child: Super Mario Bros 3. Although it wasn’t my favorite Mario game on the SNES, that spot is held by Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros 3 remains an unparalleled classic that deserves to be revived.
Although Super Mario Bros 3 was originally released for the NES, it wasn’t until years later that I enjoyed its original version. I experienced it on a version with, let’s say, more pixels and corrections: the one intended for the SNES. Perhaps this made me enjoy it even more and this became my favorite version, even superior to the reimagined version on the Nintendo DS.
Seeing the curtains reopen in the theater where the game unfolds transported me back to a time when I spent hours discovering every corner of Super Mario Bros 3. The expectations with which I decided to play it again were met and exceeded. Smooth gameplay, cheerful music, memorable moments, and the colorful level maps with their unique challenges and seemingly random moments. I retraced the paths of my childhood, paying much more attention to the details and the complexity in the seemingly simple level designs.
Spending hours trying to beat each level, discovering secrets, and finding special power-ups was an incredible experience. Seeing the Angry Sun level for the first time is disconcerting and a bit scary, but it also adds to the excitement and diversity of the game. Climbing onto the Airship for the first time was another unforgettable experience, mixing admiration with a bit of nervousness about what might come next. Playing the game again as an adult allowed me to see details I had previously overlooked and appreciate even more the complexity of the level design. The sense of nostalgia was intense, reminding me of simple yet happy moments of childhood, where responsibilities were few and fun was endless.
Of Super Mario Bros 3, we can say an infinite number of good things that surpass the hardware and software limitations of the time. The magic in a few kilobytes ranges from perfectly designed levels with an excellent balance between accessibility for all audiences and constant challenge. Each world has its own narrative and story: each island, desert, and castle, the enemies moving on the map, and the bonuses tell their story.
And it’s no coincidence we see those curtains; we are witnessing a theatrical performance, with characters acting for us and telling their story. The music is memorable and I could even assure you that it evokes feelings of urgency and drama at the right moments, turning everything into a much more immersive experience.
We also owe a lot to this game, which helped lay the foundations in the Super Mario universe and beyond the saga, in several platformer genre games. A more interactive level map than ever, mini-games, bonuses, mini-bosses, and let's not forget the legendary power-ups like the raccoon leaf, which is undoubtedly one of my favorites, almost on par with the feather we would see in Super Mario World.
Call me nostalgic, but replaying Super Mario Bros 3 made me forget about time for a moment, rediscover and reconnect with a part of my childhood, and let my adult self rest. Without a doubt, I think this game is still worth it even after so much time, and I would love for new players to enjoy it or at least give it a chance.
