The Invisible Hierarchy That Moves Your Money

By CubanCrypt | CubanCrypt | 8 May 2026

There are four players in the financial market that most traders fail to distinguish. And it's nobody's fault.
Because they look alike, they blend together, and sometimes one does the work of another.

But if you can't differentiate them, you're trading blind.

Let's put a name and face to each one. In plain English, the way we like it.

1. Liquidity Provider (LP): the one with the real money.

It's the bank, the fund, the large institution. The one with the real capital. It doesn't operate like you. It doesn't day trade. It simply lends its money so that others can buy and sell.

Examples: JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs. In Forex, central banks and large commercial banks.

The LP doesn't appear on your screen. You don't know it exists. But without it, there's no spread, no execution, no market.

2. The Market Maker: The Price Maker.

The Market Maker takes the money from the LP and sits at the exchange placing buy and sell orders.
Their job is to ensure there's always a price to buy and a price to sell.

They earn from the spread—the difference between the bid and ask. They don't care if the price goes up or down. What matters is that there's volume to collect their invisible commission.

In crypto, many exchanges act as in-house Market Makers. In Forex, they're specialized firms. In stocks, they're giants like Citadel or Virtu.

When the market is calm, the spread is small. When there's news or volatility, Market Makers can withdraw. And that's when you see huge spreads and brutal slippage.

3. The Exchange: The Arena Where the Game is Played.

The Exchange is the venue. The platform. The order book. It doesn't have its own money. It doesn't bet. It only sets the rules and displays the prices.

Examples: NYSE, Nasdaq, CME. In crypto: Binance, Bitunix, Kraken.

The problem is that in crypto, many exchanges aren't just exchanges. They're also market makers. They're also custodians. They're also brokers. And that's where the confusion begins.

4. The Broker: Your Representative.

The broker is the one who gives you access to the arena. You say, "I want to buy," they go, execute the trade, and charge you a commission. They don't set prices. They don't create liquidity. They just connect you.

Examples: Interactive Brokers, Vantage. In crypto, the line is blurred because many exchanges act as brokers directly.

A good broker doesn't bet against you. They just execute. A bad broker (or a "dealing desk") can be your counterparty. And that's where the problems start.

The Real Hierarchy (So You Don't Get Lost)

• LP: The one with the money.
• Market Maker: The one who moves the money in the market.
• Exchange: The place where it moves.
• Broker: The one who lets you see and participate (for a commission).

What this means for your trading

• When you see a wide spread, it's not the broker. It's the market maker who pulled out.
• When your order is executed incorrectly, it could be the exchange or the broker. But rarely the LP.
• When you trade crypto, the exchange is often your counterparty. You win, they lose. You lose, they win. That's why you sometimes feel like "the market is against you."

In Forex, if your broker is "without a dealing desk," they don't bet against you. They connect you directly to an LP. But that LP can see your orders. If you're small, they don't care about you. If you're large, they can move before you.

The fact no one tells you.

In times of high volatility, market makers can cancel their orders. LPs can withdraw liquidity. Exchanges can halt trading.
And you, the trader, are left staring at a screen that doesn't move, or with spreads you don't understand.

It's not a conspiracy. It's market mechanics. But if you don't know it, it catches you off guard.

You don't need to operate like an institutional investor. But you do need to know who's on the other side of your order.
Because the market isn't a neutral machine.
It's an ecosystem with players, interests, and hierarchies.
And those who understand the hierarchy operate with their eyes open.
