The cruelty of crypto? A reply to Rachel O'Dwyeris

In a recent article via the philosophical magazine Aeon, Rachel O'Dwyeris, a writer and lecturer in digital cultures at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and author of Tokens: The Future of Money in the Age of the Platform, has written about cryptocurrencies as Bitcoin.

The first part discusses using compelling narratives, like those portrayed in Crypto.com's Super Bowl ads, to promote cryptocurrencies as pathways to wealth and success. It contrasts these narratives with the harsh reality many investors face, highlighting the volatility and risks involved in crypto investment.

It then delves into the historical context of cryptocurrencies, tracing their origins to the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and their evolution from niche communities to mainstream investment options. It also explores how cryptocurrencies were framed as financial inclusion and empowerment opportunities, particularly for marginalized communities like Black Americans.

The text further examines the phenomenon of retail trading, mainly popularized during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its connection to broader societal trends, such as disillusionment with traditional pathways to success and the search for alternative means of financial security.

The concept of "cruel optimism" is introduced. It describes the desire for something that ultimately harms us and how it manifests in various aspects of modern life, including financial speculation.

The narrative shifts to a discussion of generational experiences and the impact of economic instability on millennials and Gen Z, who grew up amidst financial crises and face uncertain futures. It reflects the shift from traditional notions of success and security to more speculative and risky investment strategies.

Ultimately, the text portrays financial markets as detached from reality, driven by nihilistic and desperate sentiments, where the pursuit of security has become akin to gambling for survival in a world devoid of traditional dreams and futures.

I understand O'Dwyeris's criticism, but I'm afraid I have to disagree with most of the content and arguments. There are several reasons for that.

Cryptocurrencies have emerged as a transformative force in the global financial landscape, offering innovative solutions to traditional problems and empowering individuals with financial sovereignty. While some critics may raise concerns about the volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and environmental impact of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, it's essential to recognize the broader benefits and opportunities they bring to the table.

First and foremost, cryptocurrencies represent a paradigm shift towards decentralization and democratization of finance. Unlike traditional currencies, which are subject to the control of central authorities and susceptible to inflation and manipulation, cryptocurrencies operate on decentralized blockchain networks. This decentralization ensures transparency, immutability, and security, making them a reliable store of value and medium of exchange.

Moreover, cryptocurrencies foster financial inclusion by providing access to financial services for billions of unbanked and underbanked individuals worldwide. With a smartphone and internet connection, anyone can participate in the global economy, send and receive remittances, access loans, and engage in commerce without traditional banking infrastructure.

Contrary to claims about high transaction fees, cryptocurrencies often offer lower costs for cross-border transactions than traditional banking systems. This cost-effectiveness makes cryptocurrencies attractive for international remittances and cross-border trade, particularly in regions where traditional banking services are expensive or inaccessible.

While critics may highlight the volatility of cryptocurrencies, it's essential to recognize that volatility is a natural feature of emerging asset classes. Over time, as adoption and liquidity increase, cryptocurrencies will likely become more stable and less prone to price fluctuations. Furthermore, volatility presents opportunities for traders and investors to profit from price movements, contributing to market liquidity and efficiency.

Regarding regulatory concerns, it's crucial to distinguish between legitimate regulatory oversight to protect investors and consumers and overzealous or restrictive regulations that stifle innovation and growth. Appropriately crafted regulations can provide clarity and legitimacy to the cryptocurrency industry, fostering trust and confidence among market participants while safeguarding against illicit activities.

Concerns about the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining should be stated and understood more. While it's true that some cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, consume energy-intensive mining processes, innovative solutions such as renewable energy sources and more efficient mining algorithms are mitigating these concerns.

Additionally, the environmental impact of traditional financial systems, including banking infrastructure and cash production, must be considered in any comparative analysis.

Thanks to decentralization, fostering financial inclusion, promoting innovation, and addressing regulatory challenges collaboratively, cryptocurrencies can play a pivotal role in creating a more inclusive, efficient, and resilient financial system for the future.
