International financial institions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have since been criticized for behaviors such as "monetary colonialism" regarding policies and decisions impacting the values of public/national currencies as in Africa.
Such criticism has historically come from left-wing political groups and individuals demanding more government intervention, control, and nationalization. However, in a recent case for decentralization and cryptocurrencies, activists Alex Gladstein argues that the solution against monetary colonialism is not in more government and decentralization but in decentralization and by using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
