ETH merge, Shapella, Cancun hardforsk and Polkadot infrastructure

Looking for some exciting crypto news? Bankless DAO is publishing further updates and info every day.

Here are some recent examples.

Shapella update

Shapella, Ethereum's latest hard fork, enabled stakers to withdraw their previously locked rewards and 32 Ether initial node collateral. Despite concerns of a massive sell-off, the exit queue size remains manageable, the net validator count is increasing, and the liquid-staking derivatives (LSD) market remains strong. Centralized staking providers have been negatively impacted by withdrawals, likely due to regulatory pressures and high fees. Meanwhile, decentralized solutions are growing in popularity to maintain net neutrality. The exit queue is currently processing full validator exits, with an estimated processing time of 17 days for all withdrawals. Despite initial outflows, net flows are turning positive as staking becomes a viable option for ETH holders looking to retain liquidity. The hard fork has successfully empowered depositors with liquidity and decentralized network security.

EIP-4844 Cancun hardfork

  1.  EIP-4844 is the next significant hardfork for Ethereum, aimed at tackling scalability issues. Rollups, currently used to ease scalability problems, are an interim solution that is still too costly and slow. EIP-4844, the "proto-danksharding" proposal, seeks to improve rollup speed and cost. Proto-dank sharding increases block capacity, reducing roll-up costs and allowing for more transactions. It is scheduled for Q3-Q4 2023 but could be subject to delays.

  2. Distributed validator technology Distributed validator technology (DVT) makes node validation easier without sacrificing decentralization. By using multi-party computation (MPC), groups of individuals can collectively stake different amounts of ETH and run a node together. DVT lowers the financial barrier to entry, potentially reducing market concentration in ETH staking. DVT is currently being tested for mainnet deployment and may be ready by Q3 2023.

  3. Proposer-builder separation Proposer-builder separation (PBS) addresses centralization in block-building by dividing the tasks of proposing and building blocks. This will prevent block validators from discriminating between individual transactions. PBS is not expected to be ready until at least 2025, but third-party solutions like Flashbots' MEV-Boost are available to address the issue.

As Ethereum has fully transitioned to proof-of-stake, the focus now shifts to solving scalability, capital inefficiency, and block validator centralization issues. EIP-4844 distributed validator technology and proposer-builder separation are vital innovations for Ethereum's development.

The Merge on Ethereum's environmental track record and the infrastructure and projects on Polkadot.

  1. The Merge's environmental impact: Ethereum's transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake drastically reduced energy usage, making the blockchain more environmentally friendly and accelerating large-scale adoption.

  2. ZK-rollups transform the trilemma into a dilemma: ZK-rollups on Ethereum help address the Blockchain Trilemma by balancing performance against compatibility, making overcoming the trilemma's challenges more manageable.

  3. App-chain thesis enters Ethereum: The emergence of Rollups-as-a-Service on Ethereum leads to the rise of app-specific chains (Layer 2s and 3s built for single applications), allowing developers to create customizable tech stacks and remove limitations from the Ethereum Layer 1.

  4. Alternative L1s: Polkadot: Polkadot, a Layer 1 blockchain, aims to build a diverse and interoperable ecosystem, addressing challenges such as interoperability, customization, scalability, on-chain governance, self-upgradability, and security.
