Cryptocurrencies and monetary policies - Bitcoin and gold

By Vladan Lausevic | CryptoVlad | 24 Mar 2023

The following article is based on my work discussing cryptocurrencies and monetary policies.

In 2018, Andrea O'Sullivan published an article about how cryptocurrencies affect monetary policies. According to O'Sullivan, cryptocurrencies have generated much debate about their potential impact on established monetary policy. Some people fear digital currencies may undermine central banks' ability to manage national economic policy goals. In contrast, central banks could benefit from issuing their national cryptocurrencies. However, it is unlikely that either of these outcomes will occur in the near future.

One reason is that cryptocurrencies still represent less of the world's financial assets. Even Bitcoin's market capitalization is still a tiny percentage of the global stocks, gold, and broad money supply. Consequently, cryptocurrencies are unlikely to significantly affect the central bank's day-to-day operations in the short term.

While some argue that cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin could threaten monetary stability, this argument could also be applied to any alternative asset, such as gold. In countries with poor monetary management, cryptocurrencies can provide a valuable alternative for citizens seeking to protect their assets from inflation.

Some central banks have explored the possibility of issuing their cryptocurrencies. Still, they may find that the rigid monetary supply of digital currencies is incompatible with their policy needs. Instead, central banks are more likely to experiment with distributed ledger technologies to improve settlement services or even consider buying existing cryptocurrencies as part of their reserve portfolio.

In conclusion, while cryptocurrencies hold much promise for expanding monetary options and providing security for people in economically unstable countries, it is unlikely that central banks will adopt state-backed digital currencies wholesale due to the limitations they pose on managing the national money supply.
