Bitcoin Season Is Still Running the Show

Bitcoin's Grip Isn't Loosening Yet

The altcoin season index sits in the mid-30s. Bitcoin dominance holds near 59%. Here's what the numbers actually mean right now.

Bitcoin Season Is Still Running the Show

There's a version of this market that looks almost calm on the surface. Bitcoin holding its zone, dominance steady, altcoins not exactly crashing. But if you sit with the CMC Altcoin Season Index sitting at 35 out of 100 for a while, a different picture starts forming.

We're deep in Bitcoin Season. Not borderline — deep. For altseason to register, you'd need 75% of the top 100 coins outperforming BTC over 90 days. Right now, roughly 40% are doing that. That gap isn't small.

What caught my attention though isn't the index itself — it's what's around it. Stablecoin dominance near 10% of total crypto market cap. That's a significant amount of capital that hasn't moved yet. It's not fled. It's waiting. Whether it flows back into Bitcoin first or starts touching higher-beta alts depends on something the index can't tell you: conviction timing.

The 2026 cycle has introduced something older cycles didn't have at scale — institutional rotation behavior. Professional desks running 12 to 48 hour rotation windows means the old "capital flows from BTC to ETH to alts" ladder doesn't always play out over weeks anymore. It can compress. Or it can stall indefinitely if macro sentiment stays murky.

Bitcoin retraced from its cycle high near $122K down to the mid-$60K range. That reset leverage system-wide. Altcoins, interestingly, didn't collapse proportionally — many are sitting at what look like long-term structural support levels. Which means the damage might already be priced in, even if the rotation hasn't started.

None of this means altseason is imminent. The index needs to cross and hold above 50 before that conversation becomes serious. But the conditions underneath — sidelined stablecoin capital, compressed BTC dominance range, and altcoins not making new lows — feel different from pure bear structure.

It's still Bitcoin's market. Just maybe not for as long as the index implies.
