Wouldn’t you know it? I actually have a Cake DeFi account! But no worries, I’m not gonna shill my referral code like I always do. I just want to record down my impressions after attending a Cake DeFi talk yesterday.
Yes, I have a fetish for visiting other people’s workplaces. The Cake DeFi office has all the trappings of a contemporary office - open desks, huge fridge, comfy sofa near a projector, a beer tap. It also appeared to know how to throw a talk. I mean, if it was adversely affected by the crypto contagion, it certainly didn’t betray any financial woes. Free flow of pizzas, cakes, wraps and BEER on the house. I don’t typically drink on Tuesday evenings but well, me ain’t saying nope to free beer. So that was how I came about sipping beer while plonking on the sofa, all ears for the talk.
The CTO went first. His focus was on the recent developments of three cryptos: ETH, BTC and DFI. I was surprised that he explained about ETH first but I guess it makes sense: most Singaporeans, myself included, acquired ETH first haha. He then moved on to Bitcoin Ordinals, which made me perk up a bit. Because of my attentiveness, I picked up some trivia, like how there is only one Satoshi accorded the Mythic status and how people could trade Ordinals with Cardinals. Fascinating stuff.
Finally, it was Dr. Julian Hosp’s turn. Frankly, I signed up for a talk because I wanted to get a sense of how he was like. I mean, early this year, he included me (and all Cake DeFi users) in his newsletter without prior notification, so you can imagine how pissed some users were at this sudden spam. I guess I’m all right tbh. Even though his newsletters dwell (too) heavily on the DFI chain, I do pick up some interesting theories like how BTC recently pumped due to BUSD selling. It was a theory that I got to hear him expound fairly at length in person. I also learnt that MicroStrategy now owns 1 in 150 Bitcoins and how their aggressive purchasing may be good for Bitcoin’s price but detrimental to its value. Idk if I’m exposing my financial naïveté but this was the first time I listened to someone compare price and value in such stark terms. So I kinda felt that I benefitted.
