Some of us actively use sell high buy low as part of our exit strategy. We determine when our coins are reaching their ATHs and strike when the iron is hot. Some of us who are heavily vested in Ethereum plan to sell part of their ETH before the Merge on 15 September because it is widely predicted that its price will fall after people dump their ETH in anticipation of the Merge.

Since it is so hard to gauge the opportune moment to sell at the top, how do you do so to ensure that you take profits? Or do you just set up a sell order and be content when it proceeds smoothly, removing the need to optimise profits?

Have realistic expectations. Sell high buy low instead of selling highest buying lowest. Remove the need to optimise profits and be contented with whatever gains you derive from the bull run.

DCA out. When the price is pumping, be sure to take small chunks of profits on the way up. Sell your set percentages at specific prices. Some of them will materialise while others will fall through. If your coin has risen by 50%, take out 20%. If the coin subsequently increases by 80%, you take out another 20%.

You won’t get the exact top, but it’s more feasible and conducive for your mental health than trying to time the market. This is because you have already withdrawn your initial investment plus profits - and still have something left in the bag in case the coin surges in price.

A non-technical way to determine when you could switch from DCA in to DCA out is when you feel the need to flex your burgeoning portfolio in front of your family and friends, it’s probably time to zoom out and start to DCA out.
