When is a fork not a fork?
Maybe you've heard of Chia - green farming of hard drive space?
And maybe you know there are some forks? Flax, Spare, Goji and many others.
So what's different about Chives?
Chives is a very interesting project at an early stage and the entry levels are quite low. IMHO it is definitely worth a try.
Rather than just a clone of Chia, the Chives team have gone in a different direction in that it's necessary to create specific Chives plots and then farm them. You can't just point Chives at Chia plots (like you do with the other forks!
Here's the key - the plots are much smaller than Chia ones, so you can utilize leftover space on Chia farmer drives more easily, the plotting times are faster, you can use a smaller SSD to do the plotting etc.
- K-29 11.5GiB plots, temp space 29.87GiB [12.38GB, 32.07GB]
- K-30 23.8GiB plots, temp space 59.75GiB [25.55GB, 64.16]
- K-31 49.1GiB plots, temp space 119.5GiB [52.72Gb, 128.32GB ] *this is bigger than a Chia plot so, personally I would use it for Chia
- Plotting time for a K-29 is around an hour (at least on my system, faster if you use MadMax plotter)
- A community is developing - Reddit
- There are some opportunities to earn Chives tokens (XCC) via blogging, twitter and even quizzes (English & Chinese)
- Fork coin exchange coming soon
What you'll need
Pretty much like the minimum requirements for Chia, computer of some kind (Windows, Mac, Linux), some external drives (SSDs or HDDs), internet connection.
You can get by with just HDDs - if there is enough space do the the plotting and farming on the same drive, but if you have an SSD (even small one) you can speed up the plotting process.
