SOOOOO many hotels in Kyoto.
How do you choose one to stay in?
Well of course it is a personal choice - luxury or budget and location, facilities and neighborhood.
Last August I stayed in a great, funky hotel named Hotel Anteroom
Why did I like it?
- great budget option (around 6,000 yen for a small room)
- the excellent breakfast (eat so much that you can last to dinner!)

- the funky lobby / industrial, exposed design aesthetic / gamer + Nintendo culture

- the "make your own bath salts"
What are the downsides?
- the location ain't great (but only in terms of sightseeing spots).
Hotel Anteroom is south of Kyoto station which used to be the poorest area, but access from Kyoto JR by taxi is cheap, although if you are a cheapo like me, you can walk (stock up on snacks and drinks in Don Quixote), but it is equidistant to subway stations Jujo and Kujo on the Karasuma line. The nearest sightseeing spot is Fushimi Inari shrine which has the bright red torii gates
- most of the rooms are basic (*but there are some arty designer rooms and one has a hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath which I recommend). The building itself used to a student dormitory.
There are some designer room options though.

Still if you come to Japan, you have to go to Kyoto.

Any questions, I will respond in messages!
