Today, I joined Mirror and published my first post. (It's a repost of my writing on why I'm choosing Solana, not Ethereum, for blockchain development. At the time of writing this, it's just $0.05 short of $1.00 in tips, which is good going for me. If only I regularly earned $2.00 a day from my crypto activities, I just might afford small luxuries.) For this, I have two acknowledgements to make:
- Allen Taylor for bringing Mirror to my attention and encouraging me to try it. If you're not already following him, I suggest you consider changing that. He's one of my favourite writers here.
- The good people of Pub0x, particularly my followers, for supporting me and showing me that it is indeed possible to earn ~$1 a post on rare occasions.
Now, I want to make that ~$1.00 a post thing a regular occurrence, FSM willing. Since Medium (Stripe) won't pay me for my efforts, Mirror seems like a great alternative for extending my presence/reach online. Here's why:
- Mirror is a long-form blogging site, just like Medium is.
- Mirror's editor is very similar to Medium's. (That means some Markdown is supported. I find that particularly awesome, since I tend to compose and edit my posts in Markdown anyway before copying them into Pub0x and changing them. That saves me a step and makes the process faster. I should be able to copy from Mirror to Pub0x now, all going well. I hope so, since I've been having issues with TinyMCE for a while.)
- Unlike Medium, Mirror supports integration of NFTs and other Web3 wigdets and wizardry.
- As far as I know, Mirror doesn't discriminate against me because of my geographical location and country of residence. All it knows is my MetaMask wallet address. Medium (Stripe), however, very much does. Web3 FTW, right?!
- Mirror allows me to turn my posts into NFTs and set the price for them. To test this out, I've published my most recent popular post from Pub0x on Mirror and made it available for the princely sum of ~$1.18 (0.006 ETH, if I recall correctly. I can't specify more than three decimal places).
- Sadly, Mirror uses Ethereum (ETH) and requires connecting a MetaMask wallet in order to use it. By now, you probably all know how I feel about that. (SOL, SOL, give me your SOL!) It also uses Arweave, another project of which I'm not a fan. I guess I win some and I lose some ...
As much as my first impressions of Mirror are good and I intend to use it going forward, this doesn't mean I'm leaving Pub0x. (I've tried that before and it hasn't gone well.) Rather, I'm expanding my horizons (and hopefully reader base). I'll be using Mirror as exactly that, a mirror for my popular (id est, high-earning) Pub0x content. I'm going to be copying my more successful posts from here to Mirror, as I prefer Mirror's editor and I want to explore an additional option for earnings. However, most of my followers are still here on good old Pub0x and are unlikely to migrate. It would probably be a waste of my time and energy to get them/you to switch (even though they/you might benefit if regularly writing posts is part of the Pub0x experience). If you like one of my more popular posts on Pub0x, expect it to appear on Mirror within forty-eight hours, in which case it will be available as an NFT.
I'm starting off with my first post at 0.006 ETH (~$1.00) and making 250 of them available mainly as an experiment to test the waters. I don't think that will be a practical/sustainable price for my posts going forward, however. I'll need to work out how much time I spend writing and editing them in order to arrive at a more realistic cost for NFTs (factoring in how many I mint), but I don't want to get ahead of myself just yet.
As mentioned above, I have to thank Allen Taylor for getting me interested in giving Mirror a try. As far as I can tell, you should probably be on Mirror if you're already on Medium.
On a side note, I've been watching Black Mirror and really enjoying it. It's my kind of odd.
"Shot by a security camera.
You can't watch your own image
And also look yourself in the eye.
Black Mirror, Black Mirror, Black Mirror!I know a time is coming,
All words will lose their meaning.
Please show me something that isn't mine
But mine is the only kind that I relate to![...]
The black mirror shows no reflection.
It knows not pride nor vanity.
It cares not about your dreams.
It cares not for your pyramid schemes."

If you’d like to follow me over to Mirror from Publish0x (particularly to subscribe or purchase my posts as NFTs), good on you for making that decision. (Please see the "Resources" section for relevant links to my account and first post on Mirror, since I can no longer insert links inline on Pub0x.) Please subscribe for more content from me there. If you like my posts on Mirror (which will be reposts of my popular ones on Pub0x to start with), please add them to your collection. Thank you for reading and for your support to date. Since I don't have an ENS (and probably never will for both ideological and financial reasons; I'd rather use something similar for BCH or XNO), you're going to have to rely on my Ethereum address:
