UK Minister wants Ban on Crypto Political Donations
The United Kingdom have seen the Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, become the first British political group to accept Bitcoin donations. This has led to concerns over the potential of foreign powers being able to exploit untraceable cryptocurrency to sway British politics. This is according to UK Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden as he called for election officials to consider banning political donations made in digital currencies.
McFadden said that tracing crypto donations can be extremely challenging and that the Electoral Commission should review whether current rules are fit for purpose in the evolving digital age. This came about after Nigel Farage’s announcement that his Reform UK party would become the first British political group which would accept Bitcoin donations, which is similar to what Donald Trump did during his 2024 election campaign.
Pat McFadden is the Cabinet Office minister and close ally of the prime minister, Keir Starmer. His comments come two months after Farage's party announced they would be accepting crypto donations. The campaign group Spotlight on Corruption made the warning that such practices could open doors for covert foreign interference, undermining democratic processes.
During a joint Commons and Lords committee session on national security the Labour MP Liam Byrne questioned McFadden on this issue as he prompted the minister to stress the importance of transparency and legislative updates to protect the integrity of political funding. Other conditions were raised regarding the potential of donations from “unlimited companies,” whose financial records are difficult to scrutinize.
In unison both McFadden and Byrne agreed that strengthening resources for the Electoral Commission and the National Crime Agency is essential to better police political finances. It was described by Byrne that the current party finance rules are akin to a “Kremlin’s charter” favouring opacity, calling for bans on crypto donations and foreign money, alongside enhanced enforcement. McFadden stated:
“I think it’s a very good question and I definitely think it is something that the Electoral Commission should be considering. The funding of democracy is often a controversial area but I think that it’s very important that we know who is providing the donation, are they properly registered, what are the bona fides of that donation. I think it’s a very important question you’ve asked.
I always think that the legislation should keep up with the technology and practices of the time. So if you’re asking me should the legislation consider whether the current systems are fit for purpose, I think that’s a very real challenge.”
McFadden’s comments signal openness to tighter crypto donation controls and government sources have indicated that during the upcoming election reform proposals may stop short of an outright ban. It seems more likely that a forthcoming strategy paper is expected to tighten general foreign interference rules, extend them to digital currencies, and promote voter registration reforms, such as lowering the voting age to 16 and protecting candidates from abuse.
