South Korea Investigates Worldcoin

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and had an excellent weekend, welcome to CryptoGod-1’s blog on all things crypto. In this post I will look at the recent announcement in South Korea that they are probing WorldCoin for collecting and processing sensitive information.

The South Korean committee responsible for personal information matters have opened a probe into WorldCoin due to the company collecting and processing sensitive information. Announced in a government notice on Monday the 4th of March 2024, the notice stated that the Personal Information Protection Committee initiated an investigation into the digital identity project on the 29th of February 2024. They noted this action came about due to a number of complaints made regarding WorldCoin collecting and processing personal information, including iris scanning.

Within the notice it was noted how WorldCoin affiliates are currently collecting facial and iris recognition data at around 10 locations in Korea. Due to this the commission is going to probe the overall collection and overseas transfer of personal information. This will also result in action being taken against the business if violations of the Personal Information Protection Act are found.

Worldcoin, led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has been causing concerns globally over their handling of biometric data and the privacy issues associated with it. Regulators in various countries, including Germany, France, and Britain, have announced investigations into the project’s practices regarding biometric information management.

South Korea are the latest to have joined this list, with Hong Kong's data protection authority having investigated six WorldCoin booths in a recent crackdown. Hong Kong’s Privacy Commissioner Chung Liling warned the public about the risks associated with participating in iris scanning activities and urged caution from any member of the public considering using the technology. India, Brazil, and France have all seen WorldCoin temporarily halt their orb verification service.

While the global concerns remain with WorldCoin and its practices, they continue with their aim of establishing a universal basic income system where individuals receive regular cryptocurrency grants as a guaranteed income source. Through the use of their device known as the “Orb,” which scan people’s eyes, WorldCoin plans to ensure a fair distribution of grants to different individuals.

Plenty of claims have been noted against the controversial practices of WorldCoin but to date over 3.9 million people have allowed their iris to be scanned, while over 450,000 people make use of the wallet and transactions on a daily basis.

Have a great day.
