Ross Ulbricht at Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at how Ross Ulbricht made his first public appearance since being released from prison when he attended the 2025 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas.

In his first appearance since being released after spending over in decade behind bars, Ross Ulbricht addressed the Bitcoin community and stated that Bitcoin had grown into a movement so powerful it had been capable of freeing him from prison. Ulbricht had been incarcerated for creating and running the infamous darknet marketplace known as Silk Road before being sentenced to serve a double life sentence without the possibility of parole by a federal judge in May 2015.

Ulbricht noted that during his time in prison he felt “there were days when I thought I would die in that awful cage” but that he managed to keep going and even found levels of joy in the darkest time. As he spoke to the attendees Ulbricht stated he risked his life and lost freedom for an idea which grew and developed into a movement. At the conference he received a warm welcome from the community that never stopped supporting him and eventually helped to secure his freedom. He stated:

“What was just an idea has become a movement so powerful that it managed to free me ten years later.”

He explained how the idea of freedom had always been at the centre of his vision and he stated that “regaining freedom is as wonderful as losing it is devastating.” This is not the first appearance for Ross at the Bitcoin Conference, as back in 2021 he appeared via a phone call from prison. However after this he was thrown into solitary confinement and put under heavy surveillance, but stated that it was worth it and it made him feel like for a moment he had broke through the prison. Ulbricht noted:

"That was an attempt at spiritual escape, today it is its mirror image."

After eleven years behind bars Ulbricht has entered a new world with technology and developments he is still catching up with. It is a profoundly changed world and Ross compared himself to Rip Van Winkle, the literary character who wakes up after a long sleep:

“I effectively went into a time capsule in 2013 and now I’m coming out like Rip Van Winkle. I mean, just a few months ago when I walked out of prison, I’d never seen a drone. I had never experienced VR or chatted with AI.”

He also addressed the change in the crypto landscape and industry since he went to prison. Back when Ulbricht launched Silk Road there was just a single exchange where people could purchase and sell Bitcoin. These days the landscape has entirely change, with Ross noting:

“When I launched Silk Road, there was only one exchange to buy Bitcoin. Now, it seems like every app I download has a built-in wallet with one-click buying options.”

He also noted that the birth of new cryptocurrencies, blockchain, DeFi, and Web3 along with the integration of AI tools to navigate the space is ushering in a new digital universe.

“There’s DeFi and Web 3 and now there’s AI to help me navigate it all. It’s nuts.”

Prior to his speech there was also a heartfelt video montage which showed scenes of Ulbricht adjusting to life beyond prison. The images portrayed him walking on the beach, learning to surf, spending intimate moments with his wife, and savouring every moment of his 'ritrovata libertà.' It was a montage which resonated with the audience and highlighted the transformation of a man who paid a very high price for his ideas. Ross finished his speech with an appeal to the Bitcoin community regarding the importance of not forgetting the three fundamental principles which should guide them - freedom, decentralization and unity.

Ross recounted that his time in prison how he noticed the unity among the inmates and that it was the only way to be heard by the administration. He noted that if prisoners are divided they are easier to rule, but united prisoners ensure the administration listen. He noted:

"When we were divided, it was easy to control us. When we all went on hunger strike together, they showed up and listened.”

Ulbricht concluded that the crypto community must remain united and not see each other as enemies.

"We must not see each other as enemies. If we can agree that we deserve freedom and that decentralisation is the way to achieve it, then we can stay united. We can protect each other, just like you have done with me. Stay true to these principles and the future is ours."

With his testimony, Ulbricht wanted to remind that the crypto community is not just technology or finance, but also and above all a matter of values. And if these values remain strong, the future can truly belong to those who believe in freedom.

Have a great day.
