MasterCard wants Crypto as Payment Tech

The global financial payments company Mastercard is integrating crypto into its global network through on-ramp and off-ramp services. They do not view crypto as a radical disruptor but instead they feel digital assets are an evolving tool that can enhance existing financial infrastructure. Christian Rau, Mastercard’s Head of Crypto for Europe. told The Big Whale that the company’s approach to crypto remains consistent with its mission to enable secure, compliant payments. He stated:

“Our strategy hasn’t changed in 50 years. Crypto fits into this logic. We are not seeking to reinvent the system but to enrich it.”

They have partnered with MetaMask, Bitget, MoonPay, and more, to enable seamless crypto payments in retail environments. Rau also highlighted the added complexity when dealing with non-custodial wallets. Mastercard has designed a new architecture by using smart contracts that verify wallet balances in real-time before enabling transactions. The company have acknowledged he growing relevance of stablecoins, now processing volumes greater than Mastercard’s network, it doesn’t view them as a threat.

“We consider them as a settlement technology. They can improve cross-border payments or reduce exchange rate risks. But they do not replace the services we provide, such as protection in case of disputes.”

While Mastercard does not currently have a public blockchain initiative, Rau did not rule out the possibility. He stated they will prioritize interoperability with existing solutions but if they are unable to create a solution they consider it.
