Ex-Pump.fun Dev Faces 7+ Years Prison
A former Pump.fun senior developer, Jarett Dunn, has violated his bail conditions and is now being held in a London prison. Dunn was jailed as he awaits a hearing regarding his attack on the Solana memecoin launchpad, Pump.fun. The launchpad has since risen to become a major success and Dunn has previously pleaded guilty to fraud by way of an abuse of position. He also pleaded guilty to the transfer of criminal property after he drained an estimated $2 million from Pump.fun.
Dunn had been working at Pump.fun for about 6 weeks at the time of his crime and during an October hearing scheduled to be his sentencing he requested to vacate his guilty plea. This resulted in his legal team quitting the case. The Canadian national has since been awaiting a hearing to formally withdraw his guilty plea. The court could still decide to reject the request.
Over the past eight months or so Dunn has been living in London, but he decided to move north to Liverpool on a whim in early June. Dunn told Decrypt at the time that he didn’t like London and that he preferred Liverpool due to its “emptiness.” Unfortunately for Dunn this move violated his bail conditions, which restricted his movement and monitored him through an ankle tag. Due to this Dunn has been thrown into Walton Prison in Liverpool and held on remand. He was later moved to HMP Pentonville in London in July. Dunn posted on 'X':
“Bail was denied a couple of times and I may just stick with a guilty plea and serve my time and earn a couple of degrees. Zero rap3s, zero beatings, food is great, and a lot cheaper than living on my own."
Dunn is accused of exploiting his privileged position within the PumpFun ecosystem to siphon off around $2 million in funds from a project built on the Solana blockchain. It is believed he used unauthorized access and manipulation of internal systems to gain access to the assets. The assets were traced back to wallets linked to Dunn and his actions rocked confidence in smaller Solana-based projects and launchpads.
The fact Dunn appeared ready to accept a plea deal, which would most likely have included a reduced sentence in exchange for a guilty plea and cooperation, but that he has now changed his mind is baffling to legal experts. Observers say this unexpected legal move could signal a shift in Dunn’s defence strategy or a hope for a more favourable outcome at trial, but legal experts believe a lengthy sentence remains likely.
While the move did cause problems for Pump.fun, the launchpad has moved quickly to develop into one of the most popular around. It peaked around $0.006 shortly after its debut but soon dropped back to its launch price near $0.004. Given their ICO last week and the tokens increase once again, it has since experienced a notable price setback and remains around the $0.004 mark.
