Good day everyone,
I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at a tale as old as time itself - when it comes to anything financial, don't trust your best friend!
Don't Trust your 'Best Friend' with Crypto
The only daughter of Canada’s richest family and the heiress to the Thomson Reuters media fortune, Taylor Thomson, finds herself in court against her former 'best friend' Ashley Richardson. This comes after Taylor Thomson lost more than $80 million through cryptocurrency investments which she allowed Ashley Richardson to manage. A report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) stated that the pair had been close for over a decade prior to the disastrous investments. They had built a relationship which included travel, holidays, and frequent visits between homes.
It all began in 2021 when their friendship develop into Richardson assisting Thomson with crypto purchases. At the start Richardson encouraged Thomson to invest in a token which Richardson had introduced Thomson to known as Persistence (XPRT). The token was oddly created by a psychic and unknown as to why but the heiress ultimately placed more than $40 million into the asset. From there she expanded her holdings across at least a dozen cryptocurrencies with a hefty investment.
A dispute arose between Thomson and Richardson after a number of trades were made with the investments which resulted in Thomson’s total losses exceeding $80 million. Richardson claims she was spending up to 20 hours a day managing the digital portfolio and executing trades, noting:
“Everything I did was based on her instructions, as part of her effort to minimize losses.”
The cryptocurrency had been stored on hardware wallets in Richardson's home and in many cases they were just left in drawers and other unsecured locations. Thomson disputes her approval of a number of the transactions which resulted in the losses. A forensic investigation by consulting firm Guidepost Solutions, hired by Thomson, showed more than 450,000 trades were made with her funds over several months. A lot of them were considered to be highly risky and not pre-authorized.
The legal dispute began in 2023 when Thomson filed a lawsuit against Richardson and Persistence, seeking at least $25 million in damages. She accused Richardson of misleading her regarding the coin’s potential and failing to disclose a $783,702 XPRT “finder’s fee” she allegedly received. Richardson has denied any wrongdoing and claims the investment decisions were made jointly. Richardson stated:
“There was never a formal contract between us—just a clear oral understanding, reaffirmed often, about what she wanted me to do on her behalf.”
The dispute between the once 'best friends' has since escalated to include counterclaims of defamation, with Richardson representing herself in court. Neither of the women have spoken to each other since 2022 and Thomson’s lawyers continue to pursue asset recovery. Richardson is now driving an Uber and has applied for public assistance.
The lesson of this unfortunate tale? Never trust your friends when it comes to your finances. Personal relationships can be put in jeopardy if digital assets are involved. Without written agreements or third-party oversight, informal crypto deals risk turning into high-stakes legal battles that blur financial and emotional boundaries.
