Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and having excellent day, welcome to CryptoGod-1’s blog on all things crypto. It was recently announced by the Bank of England that they will be putting together and advisory group concerning the development of the British Digital Pound.

Academic Advisory Group

On Wednesday the 9th of August 2023 the Bank of England have announced on their website that it has established a digital pound advisory group named the CBDC Academic Advisory Group (AAG). The bank is looking for specialists to join this group to be part of the taskforce who will help the nation enter the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) design phase.

The AAG will collaborate with His Majesty (HM) Treasury, while the Bank of England and Hm Treasury look to invite academics and researchers who would be willing to indicate their willingness to participate in the group. The announcement goes on to indicated that the specialists will be from various fields connected to the Bank's efforts concerning the digital pound. This will be made of people from monetary policy, finance, competition economics, industrial organization, behavioural science, law, innovation theory, marketing, and business.

The initiative will also aim to make use of academic expertise to interdisciplinary discussions concerning how to retail the CBDC and its relevance during the ongoing design phase.

"Through this group, we seek to generate expert academic input and promote interdisciplinary discussions on a range of topics related to retail CBDC."

Making a well-informed and comprehensive approach is key to the group, and the Bank considers the AAG will perform a pivotal role in the exchange of knowledge along with conducting research with experts from various disciplines. The group will also offer diverse and nuanced insights into critical CBDC-related inquiries. A key component of the groups task will be to explore the unconventional ideas, open debates, and perspectives that challenge existing paradigms regarding the digital pound.

Back in February 2023 the government launched a public consultation to gather feedback regarding potentially introducing a digital pound. This would act as a new currency for both citizens and businesses, and the initiative would aim to take a significant step forward in the nation's financial landscape.

As explained the the consultation paper, the underlying rationale is that both the institutions of the Bank of England and HM Treasury would aim to establish close collaboration with the private sector. This would aid with experimenting with proofs of concepts, and the initial phase of the consultation was concluded back in June 2023.

"The Bank of England and HM Treasury judge it likely that a digital pound will be needed in the future. It is too early to decide whether to build the infrastructure for one, but we are convinced the next stage of preparatory work is justified."

The Bank of England will now embark on a two year period to conduct these experiments along with refining the digital pounds design. This will be done in collaboration with insights from the AAG. Once the CBDC's design phase has been completed, the final decision will be made in terms of whether or not to go ahead and create the digital pound.

Have a great day.
