80,000 Bitcoin Move - Whale, Hack, or Satoshi?

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the recent move of 80,000 Bitcoin from a dormant wallet, and who could be behind it.

80,000 Bitcoin Move - Whale, Hack, or Satoshi?

The price of Bitcoin dropped to the $108,000 mark after an unexpected moved of just over 80,000 Bitcoin (~$8.6 billion). The Bitcoin had been sealed away in eight inactive wallets since 2011, when the king of crypto was trading for just under $1. Two of the wallets contained 20,000 Bitcoin each and it was purchased for a mere $0.78. Fast-forward to 2025 and on the 4th of July the tokens were transferred as part of significant transactions. Immediately this raised fears of a potential dump as Bitcoin was near-record prices.

This was the largest movement of Bitcoin in over a decade and while there have been no direct transfers to centralised exchanges as of yet, a typical sell signal was issued. The market reacted and the price of Bitcoin fell as the ripples spread across the crypto market. Traders feared that such a massive stash entering circulation could spark a correction and a number of long positions were closed, while shorts moved in around the $110,000 resistance level.

While the market was initially shocked, the lack of movement of the Bitcoin onto exchanges suggest that this may just have been an internal wallet reorganisation rather than a coordinated sell-off. Nothing is known for certain, but the event did show how sensitive the market can be. Short-term optimism in the market fell and this was reflected in the price fall of around 2%. At the time of writing Bitcoin is trading at $108,739.

The on-chain analysis firm Arkham confirmed that all eight wallets looked to be connect to the same single entity. The Bitcoin was moved into fresh wallets using newer, cheaper address formats. The movement once again showed how highly sensitive Bitcoin remains to changes in liquidity, especially as the globe face the prospect of central banks looking likely to loosen financial conditions into 2025. The biggest question on everyone's mind is who exactly is behind this massive movement of Bitcoin?

According to Conor Grogan, head of product at Coinbase, there is a small possibility that the Bitcoin was hacked or the private keys were compromised. He noted that this could be the largest crypto heist in history. While it is just speculation, Grogan pointed at an unusual transaction involving Bitcoin Cash (BCH) which was made just hours before the Bitcoin movement. He noted that it may have been a way to test whether or not the private keys to the wallets still worked. Following the single BCH transaction there was a flurry of transactions of 10,000 Bitcoin at a time shorty afterwards. Grogan noted that the behaviour looked more like compromised keys than owner activity as he stated in a number of posts on X:

“I found a single BCH test transaction from one of the BTC whale clusters 14 hours ago, followed by the full amount. An hour later, the BTC wallets began to move. There is a possibility that the owner was testing the private key in a way that wouldn’t get noticed”

"What makes me say this is the other BCH wallets have not been touched at all; why wouldn’t they also sweep these?”

Another theory, this time coming from 10x Research, is that these wallets could belong to Roger Ver. He is the early Bitcoin evangelist known as “Bitcoin Jesus.” Ver is known to have entered the Bitcoin space in February 2011 and the tokens had last been moved in May 2011, adding to the speculation. He was released on bail from a Spanish prison back on June 5 and if true then Ver could be in control on wallets with billions of dollars in value. Market speculators also believe Ver is behind the transactions, although nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

These Satoshi-era (infancy period between 2009 - 2011) Bitcoin represent a return of almost 4 million percent form their initial purchase price, which is approximately 40,000 the original amount. Whoever owns these Bitcoin would certainly be considered a Bitcoin Whale, which is an early adopter of the crypto who holds massive amounts. These Whales are often closely monitored by the community due to the Whales ability to move massive amounts of the token and cause stirs in the market.

The mystery does not end yet, as a 2023 Reddit Post actually highlighted six of these wallets which were each holding 10,000 Bitcoin. The post highlighted that these wallets could potentially belong to the likes of the Winklevoss twins, or even Satoshi himself as part of an inheritance to his children. The post notes how the Bitcoin in each wallet was accumulated in transactions of 50 Bitcoin each, which was the rewards for mining back in those days. Is Reddit user 'RealVoldemort' potentially the real owner of these wallets and just playing us all in their twisted game? lol

The identity of the owner, or owners, remains unknown but they are likely from an early miner who decided to live by the 'HODL' strategy. Another theory is that lost keys were recently recovered, or maybe the owner had set a long term goal of a price of $110,000 which was reached not long before the Bitcoin was moved. There is no concrete evidence this was Satoshi Nakamoto, although there never really is any concrete evidence when it comes to Satoshi, so the speculation continues. Its all speculative for now, but it will be interesting to keep an eye on any further activity from these wallets.

Have a great day.

Peace. CryptoGod-1.
