Good day everybody,
Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things sports. Today I will be doing a quick recap of the first legs in the Carabao Cup Semi Finals, which took place during the week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. While it is only the first leg, with the second leg to follow next week, it gives up a good indication of who should be making the final next month.
Semi Final First Legs
Tuesday 24th January 2023 at St. Mary's Stadium
Southampton 0-1 Newcastle
Joelinton
It was a mixed game overall, and took until the 73rd minute for Newcastle gain the lead. Joelinton had missed a sitter prior to scoring the only goal when he tapped home Isak's cross. Adams had wasted the best chance for Southampton, failing in a one on one with Newcastle keeper Pope, while Armstrong had a goal ruled out by VAR from handball in the build-up. Things went from bad to worse for Southampton when Caleta-Car was sent off for two bookable offences as he made a foul to stop a Newcastle chance on 86 minutes. It was the 10th clean sheet in a row for Newcastle keeper Pope and the North Easterners look a real force this season and could get themselves into only their second EFL Cup final, having finished runners up against Manchester City. Southampton will still believe they have a chance, only being a goal down, but St James Park will be a difficult ground to visit for them next week.
Wednesday 25th January 2023 at the City Ground
Nottingham Forest - Manchester United
Rashford, Weghorst, Bruno
It was a moment of magic from the inform Rashford, who after 6 minutes glided through the Forest defence and scored with a lovely left footed effort. Surridge saw a leveller ruled out for offside, and while Forest pushed on for a leveller, United were the ones who went on to score through Weghorst and double their lead on 45 minutes. In the second half Eriksen his the goal frame and Bruno sealed the comfortable win when he scored with a low strike from inside the box on 89 minutes. It was spirited from Forest, who lost their first ever League Cup semi final at their 13th appearance in it, while also losing for the first time at home since September. As for United, it is now 10 goals in 10 games for Rashford, while Weghorst got his first for the club. The Red Devils will be hoping to make their first League Cup final appearance since 2017, where they beat Southampton.
