Twitter + cryptocurrency community + John McAfee = ?

McAfee has accustomed us to its excesses, as well as to taking controversial positions and then suddenly repositioning itself; a few hours ago he did it again and this did not fail to arouse immediate reactions in the community.

After repeatedly declaring that Bitcoin would hit a new high of $ 1 million from here, McAfee suddenly seems to have retraced his steps and, just in order not to miss anything, has serenely declared that BTC is the queen of shitcoins.

The word "shitcoin" has long been used by bitcoin maximalists to define all the other coins that, they say, are destined to fail because the only real cryptocurrency is only bitcoin; this is a position that I myself have often explained to be not only excessive but even deleterious, the result of a fundamentalist approach to the market which, inevitably, ends up damaging the entire ecosystem of cryptocurrencies.

Clearly, McAfee's appears to be the most obvious of the provocations against the bitcoin maximalists, however the community does not seem to be of the same opinion and many have launched themselves against McAfee, making accusations of the most disparate; many, for example, have linked the tweet with the race for the US presidential elections of the same creator of the eponymous antivirus, stating that the reason why McAfee suddenly got off the Bitcoin wagon has to do, trivially, with the most typical ( and finally I add) logic of construction of political consensus.

Still others have speculated that McAfee intends to return to sponsor some altcoins, hence the decision to brand bitcoins as an old technology and as the first and largest shitcoin on the market.

Net of social controversy and McAfee's provocations, it seems to me that there is some element of truth in all this; the feeling is that at this moment the most interesting developments in the market are being produced by the developers working on the altcoins, while bitcoin as a project seems to be slowed down too much by the ideological clash that opposes the maximalists to those who, on the other hand, would like to try to continue to grow the project, even at the cost of deviating from what is called the original vision of satoshi; these internal conflicts in the community are those that have already produced the hard fork of the network from which bitcoin cash was born.

The freedom to move in any new direction that, instead, characterizes the altcoin market represents in itself an added value for these projects, some of which certainly appear destined to die in the long run (something that cannot be said for bitcoin) but of which the will to innovate or, at least, to try to innovate a technology that has now turned more than ten years cannot be doubted.
