The news was already known but now the project has entered the construction phase; bitmain, which had already taken over the land, started this month the construction of a huge 300-megawatt mining farm in Texas. What is being born, when it goes full steam, will be the largest bitcoin mine in the world and will reach full production capacity by 2020; the idea will be realized using machines produced by Bitmain and is the result of the collaboration of two giants, the data center developer Whinstone US, which owns a bitcoin mine in Louisiana and is building in the Netherlands and Sweden and Northern Bitcoin, world leader in the extraction of bitcoins using renewable energy. The total cost of the project is around $ 150m, but the shares of Northern Bitcoin have already taken a leap forward by 42%, practically the plant is already paying for itself.
In Texas, therefore, a production that is no longer sustainable under different points of view is definitively abandoned, the economic fabric is converted, invested in innovation and the foundations are laid for building the largest mining farm in the world.
The plant, previously owned by a state-owned company (Alumix), was sold to the Alcoa group in 1996 and had about a thousand employees at the time; the situation becomes more complicated in 2009, when the first redundancy plan starts, which will bring the workforce to halve over the next ten years precisely because of the excessive production costs and the downturn in the aluminum market, which was in crisis.
