Blockchain Gaming
Blockchain games offer several benefits to players, including on-chain assets that allow for player-driven economies, composability that enables different games to lean on one another, and the potential for user-generated content. When game assets live on-chain, there's permissionless access around who can build them, increasing the potential to create user-generated game loops around those assets. Fully on-chain games also offer benefits, such as serverless continuous deployment, autonomous worlds where governance over game rules can be delegated to players, and verifiably secure state transitions using advanced cryptography techniques. These benefits create new opportunities for game developers and players, leading to more playable loops and increased distribution.
The concept of player-driven gaming content is not new. This has been occurring for years through mods and community-created spin offs of popular games. What blockchain gaming offers, though, is the ability to turn this content into collective value for the creators, players, and platform. Additionally, ownership over in-game assets provides far more value to the player. This type of value generation loops the player into the process, awarding them for exchanging time and effort with digital ownership over collected (or created) assets.
Create-to-Earn Model
Create-to-Earn (C2E) is a game development model in which game makers provide creators with a game development kit. This enables creators to produce user generated content (UGC) and receive rewards based on their content’s performance. To create games, users purchase virtual land on the platform and build games on them. An Estate, which is made up of multiple lands, can be purchased to expand the environment and build more games. Created assets can be traded on the Sandbox marketplace and land owners can host events on the metaverse.
The Sandbox also adopts the C2E model to provide creators a method to monetize their content. To incentivize content creation, The Sandbox offers a Game Maker Fund and a Creator Fund to hire and reward creators based on the content guideline. By creating a sustainable UGC ecosystem, The Sandbox strengthens the C2E model’s instrumentality. The Mode game in the traditional gaming industry, such as StarCraft and Warcraft's Use-Map, serves as a reference for the C2E model's immersion motivation. This type of game creation encourages creators to engage in the gaming world, leading to the creation of various mode game ecosystems. The C2E model goes hand-in-hand with the principles powering the Open Metaverse’s ownership-centric business models.
Metaverse Experiences
In addition to being a platform for creating, playing, and monetizing games, The Sandbox also serves as a platform for creating metaverse experiences. Metaverse experiences are immersive environments that offer users a new way to interact with each other, brands, and digital assets. They combine the elements of e-commerce, social media, and blockchain gaming and create new opportunities for monetization. For instance, brands can create their own virtual stores within the metaverse and sell their products to users. Users can use their SAND tokens to purchase virtual assets, such as land, avatars, and other in-game items.
In The Sandbox, users can create and monetize metaverse experiences, such as virtual concerts, museums, galleries, and shopping malls. The use of blockchain technology ensures the ownership and authenticity of digital assets and creates new opportunities for value creation. By providing a platform for creating and exchanging digital assets and experiences, The Sandbox enables users to participate in a new metaverse economy.
Metaverse experiences are wildly diverse and, from a technological point of view, operate as locations within the metaverse platform. These points of reference are developed virtual land parcels and can be turned into anything of value or interest to the builder. Experiences capture the majority of value creation within the Open Metaverse, passing down revenues to users, creators, land owners, and platform investors via The Sandbox’s distributed economy.
