It’s surprising to see a quiet country like Bhutan involved in crypto mining. In 2025, they’re doing it and in a clean and  eco-friendly way using their natural hydropower.

Bhutan’s Secret Crypto Mining

Bhutan started mining Bitcoin back in 2019, using its clean hydropower. They didn’t talk much about it back then. But now in 2025, they’ve shared more details and they’re going even bigger.

Ujjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of Druk Holding and Investments discussed Bhutan's expansion of its green cryptocurrency mining operations in an interview published by Reuters on April 17, 2025. In the interview, Dahal explained that Bhutan is leveraging its abundant hydropower to mine green cryptocurrencies, aiming to increase economic growth and provide employment. Profits from past cryptocurrency investments have been used to pay government salaries and the country plans to further integrate digital assets into its economy as a sustainable and innovative strategy. 

Why It Matters in 2025

One reason I find Bhutan’s crypto mining plan so important is because of the unemployment problem in the country, especially among young people. I’ve read that many graduates can’t find jobs, and some even leave the country to work abroad. Source

That’s why this move into green crypto makes sense to me. It’s not just about earning from Bitcoin—it’s about creating new jobs and giving young people more opportunities without having to leave their home.

My Thoughts

I think what makes Bhutan’s move so interesting is the way they’re doing it. While many countries are still arguing about how to control or ban crypto, Bhutan is actually using it to build up their economy. 

To me, that’s impressive. They’re showing that crypto can be green and useful at the same time.
