I am writing here about the two false security tools used widely, but almost impossible, in Blockchain and the Internet.
As I am visiting daily few crypto websites, wallets and applications daily, I do have two issues with the following illogical creations: reCaptcha and the Backup Phrase.
1. reCaptcha
reCaptcha, now owned by Google, initially released in May 27, 2007, by a Team of well intentioned programmers.
These two so called "security" tools are so annoying and useless, so it is hard to believe that people don't give up or replace them with something more logical.
According to Wikipedia, reCAPTCHA is a provider of human verification systems, owned by Google.
According to Google support reCaptcha is a free service from Google that helps protect websites from spam and abuse. A “CAPTCHA” is a turing test to tell human and bots apart. It is easy for humans to solve, but hard for “bots” and other malicious software to figure out.
The problem with reCaptcha is, as with other Google free apps, that on majority of websites it is not recognising humans, it works very bad, it turns you any times back and forth, most of times the images are very low resolution, etc., so most of the times, the human is perceived as being a bot! 😩
Have you had this issue ? I always do!
2. Backup (Recovery) Phrase
According to tech dictionary, the Backup Phrase is a mnemonic passphrase made up of 12 or 24 words. It acts as a backup, ensuring that you can always access your funds. In the event that you forget your password or lose your device, your Backup Phrase is the only way you have to restore the wallet and retrieve access to your funds.
This is another illogical creation as there are many different ways to secure and restore a wallet!
It happened to me twice that I have tried to restore MyEtherWallet and another one, and it was a big mess as the system did not recognized the passphrase! 😒
I had it saved carefully and did the stupid hard and illogical work to fill the form with those words but no way to get in!!
Good news is that last days I've seen smart apps created by smart teams, like Argent, that gave up to 12 words passphrase and use logical ways to help you secure your wallet and funds, such as 2FA, blockchain/crypto address, password, email confirmation, sms confirmation, etc.
Conclusion
We all want more and more people to learn and join the fantastic cryptocurrency blockchain and cybersecurity space, but for this to happen, the smart programming Teams must start creating tools for people not only for themselves! This could be considered a call to them to see that we, normal people, business persons, non technicals, are here and want to be a live part of this new world of freedom and joy! Soon, probably, the old financial system will collapse, so let's hope more people will be able to join the new revolution brought by Internet and Blockchain!
