Fiat Money The word "fiat" is a Latin term that is better translated as "by decree," meaning that fiat currency, i.e. paper money, has value only because it is claimed by their respective governments.  As a consequence of these legal value decrees, paper or fiat currencies are often referred to as "legal  the tender" which means that they must be authorized for the payment of goods and services in their respective countries
