Freedom is one of the most debated and longed-for concepts in the history of mankind. We all talk about freedom and want to be free, but what do we mean by freedom? Are we really free or are we conditioned by the system, by others, by ourselves? What does it mean to be free and what risks does it entail?

Existentialist philosophy offers us a radical and provocative perspective on freedom. According to this school of thought, which had its heyday in the 20th century with authors such as Sartre, Beauvoir and Camus, freedom is not something given or guaranteed, but something that is conquered and assumed. Freedom is the ability to choose and to create our own meaning in life, without letting ourselves be carried away by norms, values or expectations imposed by society, religion or tradition. Freedom is the responsibility to define who we are and what we want to be.

But this freedom is neither easy nor comfortable. On the contrary, it implies a constant anguish in the face of uncertainty and lack of guarantees, a permanent risk of failure or of making mistakes, an active commitment to our existence and that of others, a critical conscience and an authentic attitude.

Being free does not mean doing whatever we want without caring about the consequences. Or imposing our will or our opinion on others, it does not mean denying or ignoring the reality that surrounds us. To be free means to recognize our human condition, with its limits and possibilities; it is to respect the freedom of others, with their differences and similarities. It is to be willing to dialogue with everyone, understanding their problems and challenges.

One of the most serious problems we face today is intolerance towards different opinions. Many people talk about freedom, but they do not realize that by criticizing others they are slaves of the system, because they are not capable of respecting the ideas that other people have. These people believe they are free, but in reality they are subjected to a unique or dogmatic vision of reality that prevents them from seeing beyond their own prejudices and interests. Let us not fool ourselves, they are not free, they are fanatics.

A person will not be free until he/she understands that other people may have a different opinion. Acceptance does not mean agreeing with or renouncing to defend our own ideas, it means being able to recognize the value and dignity of every human being, beyond their beliefs or convictions. It also means being willing to listen to and learn from others, without judging or disqualifying them. It is also to be tolerant and pluralistic.

Being free is a challenge that requires courage, honesty and creativity, a task that never ends and is always renewed, because it is an adventure worth living.
