Is It Possible To Hack Bitcoin or Ethereum Today?

"I think Bitcoin is the first crypto money that has the potential to do something like change the world" | Peter Thiel

What many confuse as a Bitcoin or Ethereum hack is really an exchange for cryptocurrencies, or an online wallet, being compromised. It is extremely hard to hack into a bitcoin network, but there is always the risk that coins will be stolen from the wallet on the digital currency exchange. Selling or buying things using stolen Bitcoins or Ethereum is hard as normal transactions on the network would be impossible if the blockchain was informed that those units were stolen. If the hacker gains access to Bitcoin or Ether held in the exchange or wallet, as well as the keys needed to facilitate a transaction, he or she may steal it, moving it into an offline wallet in order to escape subsequent tracking.

That means that if a hacker is able to gain access to an employees specific account--a common online security vulnerability--they could carry out a large-scale robbery, said Dave Jevans, the founder of CipherTrace, a company that tracks cryptocurrency thefts and frauds. A two-factor identity process is typically used as a safeguard, if hackers are able to gain access to some non-crypto-related personal information about the user, they could infiltrate wallets and steal Bitcoins. Hackers have also been known to steal keys to cryptocurrency wallets, a place where someones balance is stored on a blockchain. There were over 20 breaches this year in which a digital thief stole at least $10 million worth of digital currency from a crypto exchange or project.

Hackers have made off with billions of dollars worth of virtual assets over the last year, breaking into a number of crypto exchanges that emerged during the Bitcoin boom. For an asset that promises anonymity, privacy, and a virtual impossibility to get hacked, this has been a wild ride for many bitcoin users and investors. Since 2017, publicly available data shows hackers stole about $2 billion worth of cryptocurrency on the blockchain. Hackers have made off with almost $2 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017, exploiting a unique vulnerability in blockchains, according to an MIT Technology Review report.

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimated last week that such attacks account for 69% of funds stolen this year by hackers. Criminals have increasingly targeted bridges on the blockchain, and about $2 billion has been stolen from 13 separate hacks, primarily this year, researcher Chainalysis said in August. The amounts stolen from bridge hacks account for 69% of funds stolen from cryptocurrency-related hacks to date in 2022, according to data from Blockchain analytics company Chainalysis. Ellipsic, a London-based cryptocurrency blockchain researcher, told Reuters the hackers had created 2 million new BNB tokens, then transferred much of the funds into other cryptocurrencies including Tether and Dollar coin.

A blockchain linked to Binance subsequently said in a blog post that 2 million total of BNB crypto -- valued at about $570 million -- had been taken out by the hacker. Binance temporarily suspended transactions and funds transfers after it detected the breach between two blockchains, a digital theft technique recently used in at least one other significant hack. Unknown hackers gained access to $570 million in cryptocurrency from Binance, the worlds largest cryptocurrency exchange, this week, but the companys officials minimized the losses to less than $100 million, its CEO said on Friday.
