Liquidity Exodus: Why Basic Perp Venues Are Losing To Integrated Protocols

By Myxoplixx | CryptoCurious | 22 Jul 2025

Recently, there has been a major shift in how traders and investors interact with crypto markets, as more people move their money away from basic perpetual trading venues and toward more advanced, integrated infrastructure protocols. These newer protocols, like Unit and Liminal, have quickly attracted enormous amounts of attention and capital, reaching their maximum capacity as soon as they launched or integrated new features. The appeal comes from their ability to offer a combination of services, such as asset tokenization, lending, and leveraged trading, in a single platform, making things much more efficient and convenient for users.

At the same time, the crypto industry is seeing record-breaking trading volumes and open interest levels, with figures like $13.8 billion in open contracts sustained for a whole week. This indicates not only a surge of enthusiasm and trading activity but also that a growing amount of liquidity is being concentrated in these integrated platforms. These protocols offer better capital efficiency, let users use a broader variety of collateral, and tap into automated market-making systems that provide smoother trading and tighter spreads.

As a result, basic perpetual trading venues are struggling. They haven't kept up with the demand for integration and composability. Their single-use focus, lack of innovation, and limited user experiences are making them less attractive. In contrast, the new integrated protocols allow for more types of assets, smarter risk management, and a unified experience for users, who can sign in easily, avoid transaction fees, and interact across networks.

Overall, as the industry keeps innovating, the gap between simple, old-school perp venues and these new infrastructure-driven platforms is only going to widen. Unless basic perp venues evolve to match this level of integration, they're likely to continue losing global liquidity and market relevance.
