7K MetaMask Users Impacted By Data Breach

By Allen Taylor | Cryptocracy | 17 Apr 2023

Data breach affects 7,000 MetaMask users. MetaMask itself wasn’t hacked. Rather, it was a connected third-party application. This signals that users must beware of connecting other apps to any crypto wallet.

This isn’t really related to Web3, but it could impact Web3. Twitter is bedding down with eToro to allow users to trade stocks and crypto. How could this impact Web3? Twitter owner Elon Musk has publicly stated he wants to turn Twitter into an “everything app.” Moving into finance is a natural extension of Twitter’s public persona. In that regard, Twitter could become a major Web2 finance player, which could chew into some of the impact of decentralized finance, and that could eat into any presence Web3 social apps have in the future. Twitter is competing with your Web3 app and has an edge because of centralized control under the management of a brilliant business strategist.
