Airdrop is a marketing activity done by a new project team to distribute their coins/tokens amongst their “followers” for certain tasks.
The idea is if I obtain new coins for free then I would indulge in trading.
What kind of Tasks?
Subscribing to project’s newsletter, joining their social media channels. Whitelist for their token sales, give a negligible seed fund, etc.
How much Amount are we talking about?
- When Ontology was launched in April ’18 they airdropped ONT tokens equivalent to 1 BTC(at that time) to anyone who had subscribed to their newsletter.
- Internet Computer Airdropped 20–100 coins for users who had subscribed for airdrop back in 2018. At peak of listing season 1 ICP coin was at ~$600
- Synthetix (SNX) [formerly HAVVEN] airdropped 10–25 something coins to their subscribers in 2017. This is easily $200~300
- All TRX hodlers have kept on receiving airdrops in forms of BTT/APENFT etc

In early 90s when Nestle Maggi was trying to make inroads in India they used to distribute free packs of Maggi to some school kids. They did it for few weeks. And build a successful market.
WoW! Do All Airdrops pay us handsomely?
No. Not even close. Most of the airdropped coins are of subzero value (i.e. if you include the gas txn fees/cost).
Airdrop Participation is like
Shooting an arrow in the dark, at the end of the day, we would have shot hundreds of arrows with a hope at least one of them hit’s the Bulls Eye

For you to be able to participate in each and every one of the AIRDROP mentioned above you have to be the sweetest child of our father in Heaven’s Above. HAHA.
On a serious note, its just Word-of-Mouth be part of Telegram Groups, Facebook Pages, follow YouTube creators they keep imparting this information.

Join CoinMarketCap.com , they run a weekly pseudo airdrops lottery like campaigns. Keep participating in them for you never know when something might go up. NO LEGITIMATE AIRDROP WOULD EVER ASK YOU TO DEPOSIT FUNDS.
Airdrop is a one-way street with only RECEIVE/DEPOSIT function. Period.
