Why Zcash Just Flipped the Script: Inside the November 2025 Privacy Boom

Zcash’s ZEC ran more than 10x from the mid-$70s to over $700 between late September and Early November in 2025. For a brief moment ZEC returned to the large-cap territory with a valuation above $10 billion. It went on to flip Monero to become the largest privacy coin by market cap in early November when it traded around $632 at one point. With the prices shooting, ZEC became the most searched asset on Coinbase with a whopping 52 k searches vs XRP which had 41k and Bitcoin with 41k. Some describe such a scene as a clean data backed signal of retail FOMO. Retail social media went crazy because of ZEC for some time. By early November, privacy coins  as a group were up almost 80% and ZEC was sitting at a seven year high while Dash reached a three year peak. But was this a sign of a privacy boom  starting hard?

Why Zcash not just all privacy coins ran

Halving maths at play

Zcash’s most recent halving occurred on November 23, 2024 and cut block rewards from 3.125 ZEC to 1.5625 ZEC. Daily issuance was also cut from approximately 3600 to 1800 coins while the fixed supply remained at 21 million. By November 2025, the market had a full year of reduced supply and the term “sound money” plus privacy finally caught up with the chart. While halvings rarely move price on the day, they compress supply so that the next narrative window lands on a much thinner sell side. And that is usually when prices shoot up as ZEC did.

Shielded usage’s parabolic growth

Another reason why ZEC shot up was the parabolic rise in shielded usage. Over the past year ZEC held in shielded addresses (the privacy pool) grew from around 1.7 million to around 4.5 million coins. And some of the ZEC, about 1 million coins moved to shielded pools in just 3 weeks. The movement to shielded put more than 27% of the circulating supply under encryption. Other trackers later saw shielded pools spike towards 4.9 million ZEC, around 30% of the supply into the November halving hype. Now, while transparent ZEC works like Bitcoin with everything visible, shielded ZEC hides the sender and the amount using zero-knowledge proofs while the network still verifies the math. So, bigger shielded pools  bring stronger privacy and tighter liquid supply as coins held in shielded pools tend to be long term holdings. This usually pushes prices higher.

An upgrade that brought a governance and funding flip

The price rise may also have been because of NU6.1, Zcash’s eighth major network upgrade which was activated at block 3146400 on November 24, 2025 right in the middle of the boom. The NU6.1 upgrade introduced a new funding model, with 8% block rewards going to the Zcash Community Grants for community run projects. In addition 12% would go to the Coinolder Controlled Fund seeded by a protocol lockbox where ZEC holders vote on how funds are allocated. The upgrade brought a governance reset with funding decisions shifting from a few core entities toward on-chain coin holder direction. Analysts framed this development as Zcash taking its steps towards decentralizing its dev fund story. With NU6.1 Zcash quietly fixed one of its long-standing criticisms just as attention returned.

ZEC in real world rails

Finally the price boost may have resulted from real world rails coming to Zcash. In October 2025, ECC launched Zashi 2.4 with decentralized swaps powered by NEAR intents. Now, users can swap assets like BTC, USDC or SOL into ZEC directly in the wallet and then 1 tap shield for private storage. This gives ZEC a path to private liquidity that does not rely on centralized exchanges and this is an important talking point when it comes to censorship resistant privacy rails. Also, some centralized exchanges seem to have started doing privacy properly. On November 10, 2025, Gemini upgraded ZEC support so users can withdraw directly into the Orchard shielded pool. Gemini is now the only major exchange supporting modern shielded withdrawals this deeply while most rivals still only allow transparent ZEC.

Why November 2025 became the privacy boom month

There was a macro economic and narrative convergence during this time. Privacy coins rallied 80% as traders rotated out of stagnant majors into assets with clear, differentiated narratives. This included those with censorship resistant, data protection and halving driven scarcity narratives. At the same time, regulators tightened AML/ travel rules enforcement and cracked down on mixers. This made total darkness harder to defend while leaving room for auditable privacy with view keys. This is ZEC’s design sweet spot but it also makes me wonder if ZEC based privacy is real privacy. After all, view keys allow your regulators and government to take a look.

Another issue was a high profile Monero vulnerability and mounting pressure from exchanges that pushed traders to look for alternatives with ongoing upgrades, governance transparency and cleaner regulatory optics. Analysts specifically framed ZEC as a responsible privacy coin that can still fit into compliance. Now, there is a group that still believes real privacy lives in Monera because there is total darkness, and ZEC is viewed with a lot of skepticism.

The rise was also pushed by data backed attention spikes. Coinbase search data for ZEC out searched Bitcoin and XRP and ZEC futures volumes approached $10 billion on November 7. Open interest spikes show that this was not just a quiet, organic grind but a genuine blow off in the narrative and it was one which set on real on-chain and governance shifts.

Risks to weave in

There is a lot of regulatory overhand where even when ZEC presents itself as compliant privacy, privacy tokens remain in the crosshairs of EU AML rules and travel enforcement, therefore regional delistings and policy shifts can appear with little notice.

There is also a volatility and narrative risk. ZEC’s >1000% move in weeks and subsequent -30% pullback look textbook for a speculative climax. Some analysts  see November as a reprice to a new range while others see a classic blow-off top tied to leverage and derivatives.

The truth is that privacy tech, governance reforms and halving maths are structural; the price they trade at is the speculative layer on top.

Final thoughts and conclusion

The November 2025 "privacy boom" was Zcash's coming-of-age moment. It marked the convergence of institutional validation, a powerful supply shock via the halving, meaningful technological progress, and a complex but ultimately favorable regulatory environment. Once seen as a niche asset for cypherpunks, Zcash flipped the script to become an essential part of the modern crypto portfolio, representing a durable bet on the future of financial privacy.

However, a question remains, is it still real privacy when regulators and government can take a look? Or maybe also some paying customers?
